Text Appearing Before Image:
ore refined and delicatethan that of the cupola of San Giovanni Evangelista. There is notrace of the brush strokes in any of the figures, and even those whichhave been laid on the shadows to strengthen them are barelyapparent. The carnations have lost much of their reddish tint in the fullerdevelopment, or more equal diffusion, of the alabastrine tones, whichin some lights appear almost white. The shadows are obtained with-out any excess of gradations, and are therefore exquisitely transparent, with a play of reflections, through which the modelling is as perceptibleas in the illuminated portions. The air seems to circulate freelybetween the figures. In the rendering of such effects Correggio hadno superiors, and his supremacy is fully attested by these frescoes 1 Some writers have described this angel as ascending, instead of descending, notobserving that, as his draperies cling round his body, or nutter over his head in anupward direction, he must be rushing downward through the air.
Text Appearing After Image:
ST. THOMAS.Pendentive of the Cupola in the Cathedral at Parma. DEFECTS OF THE COMPOSITION 265 even now, although the cupola is sullied with dust and smoke, andin many parts defaced and reduced to ruin. This process of decay has no doubt robbed the figures of much oftheir original clearness of outline, but we cannot think that the com-position was ever a perfectly coherent and comprehensible one, evenin its first freshness. The genius of Correggio, with its great facility in resolving all
