merica. TheTrinity Parish is the oldest in the city ; its first church was erected in 1696, and de-stroyed by fire in 1776 ; the present edifice was commenced in 1839, and consecratedin 1846. Tlie church is open all day, there are prayers twice daily (at 9 a. m. and3 p. M.), and imposing choral services on Sunday. The graveyard surrounding thechurch is one of the most picturesque spots in the city. It occupies nearly twoacres of ground, is embowered in trees, and contains many venerated tombs—amongthem those of Alexander Hamilton, Captain Lawrence, the hero of the Chesa-peake, Robert Fulton, and the unfortunate Charlotte Temple. In one corner is astately Gothic monument erected to the memory of the patriots who died in Brit- NEW YORK CITY. 15 ish prisons at New York during the Revolution. Trinity Church. ure, with richly-decorated interior. Its services are choral. St. Pauls (Episco-pal), cor. Broadway and Yesey St., is a venerable structure, built in 17T6, 151 by73 ft., with a spire203 ft. high. It stands in the midst of a graveyai-d in wliich aremonuments of great interest. The pediment of the facade contains a white-marblestatue of St. Paul, and below is a monument (mural tablet) of General Montgom-ery. Grace Church (Episcopal), Broadway near 10th St., is a graceful edifice ofwhite freestone ; the interior is exceedingly elaborate, with carved work and stainedglass. St. Georges (Episcopal—Dr. Tyng), in Stuyvesant Square, two squares E.of Union Square, is one of the largest churches in the city ; it is of brownstone, inthe Byzantine style, with double spires, and the interior is magnificent. Church ofthe Transfiguration (Episcopal), 29th St. just E. of 5th Avenue known as the lit-tle church around the corner, is noted for its half-rustic, picturesque character.*S^.
