Fig. 389. Coffee tree growing in Costa Rica. An evergreen shrub, with eUiptical leaves resembling somewhat those of the laurel. The flowers are white, fragrant, and are formed in clusters among the branches, being followed by the berry-like fruits, which when ripe are about the size of and resemble the cranberry. Each fruit contains two elliptical plano-convex seeds, which on being separated constitute the so-called coffee bean of com- merce.âReproduced by permission of The Philadelphia Commercial Museum.
