Description
English: Capt. David A. Culler Jr., commanding officer of Naval Station Norfolk, explains to children from Willoughby Child Development Center the importance of Arbor Day. Arbor Day was first proposed in 1872 by J. Sterling Mortin, who thought his home state of Nebraska was too barren of trees. Mortin suggested Arbor Day be a tree-planting holiday during which prizes were offered to counties and individuals for planting the largest number of trees.
