There were, it is true, at the extremity of theCommon a few scattered cottages ; these may have served asa relief to the eye of the stranger while viewing so extensivea space of unproductive land. At that period there wasclearly no demand for open spaces. As far as one can judgethe popular feeling, it seems to have been in favour ofenclosure. Apparently no picture of Bromley Common exists, butfrom the lie of the land and from existing commons in theneighbourhood its appearance can well be imagined.
