box made of coarse burned clay. The pieces are placed within, and these are piled high throughout thekiln, which is then closed, and the contents are fired at a temperatureof 2800 degrees Fahrenheit. The pieces emerge from the kiln thoioughly vitrified, but with atoothy surface similar to that of the finest sandpaper. TTiey are thencarefully inspected for flaws or errors, after which they are dipped intothe glaze, again placed in saggers, and subjected to a second firing of2600 degrees to burn the glaze on. They come from the second firing-finished as far as the vitreous china is concerned. They are then removedto the warehouse, where there remains only the fitting or assembling ofbrass parts. They are then crated and stored awaiting .shipment.
