HE Damp-Wood or Rotten-Woodtermites (Termopsis) are the large termites(Figs. 1-4) commonly found throughoutthe coastal region of California, Oregon,and Washington, and in all the moistermountain regions up to 9,000 feet or moreas far inland as Alontana and Nevada.Their greatest natural reservoir is the downw^ood, dead stumps and stubs, and dead por-tions of living trees in our forests. Smallerreservoirs are in the canyons of the lessheavily v^ooded and more thickly popu-lated areas. From these they have spreadby means of the annual swarmings to build-ings, pilings and other structures so situ-ated as to furnish them the conditions ofabundant and continuous moisture neces-sary to their existence. Where these situa-tions exist, the damp-wood termites maycause considerable damage and expense, as,for example, in the Berkeley fire house dis-cussed below. Such co
