The porte cochere, a useful and nec-essary feature, forms a means of accentu-ating the main entrance; the auditoriummarked by its large high windows becomesan important part of the composition, as dothe stair towers, while less dominant neces-sities or conveniences such as balconies,dormers, terraces and loggias, each perform size, chose the French Chateau type becauseof its simple and ample fenestration, andbecause the steep roof seemed most fittingin the high wooded site. The steep roofused made it possible to provide for thepossibility of adding future rooms in theroof space to care for anticipated growth.The choice was well made as no style couldfit in better with the forest setting. To get the full advantage of the finelycomposed and picturesque masses, the styleof the French Chateaus has been selectedfor the treatment. The program called fora building which in sentiment and in useresembles rather a great home than a hotelor a hospital and yet must of necessity con-tain within it certain features which we as-sociate with hotels and hospitals. Mr. Gutterson, after careful considera-tion of precedents in dwellings of this great building, in spite of its great size and mass,remains essentially domestic. The exterior walls are of concrete whichis left with no other finish than a stain ofcement wash. As the forms were tightlyand accurately built and great care takenin the pouring of concrete, the surfaces areregular and yet give the feeling of solidityand strength.
