this building, ashas been true unfortunately in many otherinstances; that is that the exterior founda-tions of frame buildings should never term-inate below the finished grade (Fig. 5).In this particular instance, it has been im-possible to determine whether this detailwas disregarded at the time the buildingwas constructed or the grade raised at alater date, but the fact remains that the topof the exterior foundations was from oneto two feet below the ground adjacent to the building. This condition in itself was sufficient toafford the necessary moisture suply for theDamp-Wood termite but it is possible thatthe washing of the floors at frequent inter-vals was an additional factor. That condi-tions in this building were ideal for theDamp-Wood termite is evidenced by theextent of their infestation which can be vis-ualized from the following description ofthe damage: The 2x8 untreated sills had been de-stroyed for practically the entire distancearound the building and in some places had
