cornices, arches, tracery, gar-goyles or anything of that sort, but neitherdid we expect what was shown us. An ex-position building just naturally expresses something festive, some gladsome nationalevent. We dont usually commemorate afuneral or a stock panic with an Exposi-tion. This building expresses nothing butgloom, flat, unbroken skylines, forbiddingmien most funereal. A huge inverted cigar box, a slice cutout at the side facing us so that a corrugatedwashboard could be inserted on edge, theinner angles cut open, long strips of glassinserted and there you are. The side wingsare composed of three great massive hori-zontal spandrels or lintels the full lengthof those wings, with equally long stretchesof glass evidently supporting the lintels. The only thing I ever saw that in anyway suggested those wings was a Germanfactory with just such glass supportingheavy concrete beams, acres of it. The wholething very depressing.
