These steel arches restupon a central pylon which rises to aheight of over 110 feet from the foundationraft upon which it rests in the river chan-nel. The ends of the arches rest upon roll-ers located upon pylons rising at each bank lying away to the west. From this pointeastward a roadway of 58,Vj feet in widthleads to the avenue 700 feet away at whichpoint an open gateway is flanked by cir-cular rails designed in conformity with therail of the viaduct. The roadway is parkedand nicely landscaped by the park depart-ment and adds much to the pleasure ofthose using the viaduct. The lighting of this portion of the ap-proach is accomplished by means of a ser-ies of concrete light standards especiallydesigned to harmonize with the viaductand each carrying a single bronze lantern.In looking at these single standards one THE ARCHITFXT AND ENGINEER ^ 27 ► OCTOBER.
