TOOLS—IN PRACTICE 35 very carefully made to insure a continuously smoothline throughout the entire curved line. French curves cannot be used for all sizes of com-pound curves. There are many which, because oitheir size, too small or too large, must be made byhand, a spline or other aids. To make use of the French Curve it is necessaryto first sketch the desired line free-hand with the fullcombination of curves required, that is, by free-handdraw the desired combination curve. Then apply thewooden instrument and discover that part of segmentwhich most closely fits a portion of the line sketched.*
