Journal of Roentgenology, March,1920, says that among fifteen thousandcases examined in the x-ray laboratoryof the hospital, three cases of herniafollowed injury. The third case, how-ever, is uncertain, as there was no di-rect history of injury, but the patienthad had pneumonia in the left lung,lower lobe, with empyema following,and as drainage had been employed,there was a chance of an injury. It isof interest that the diagnosis in eachcase was made in the roentgen labora-tory. John E. Grieve, M. D., Archives ofPedriatics, October, 1920, reports achild five and one-half years old. Hesays The history of her illness, in asense, preceded her birth, inasmuch asthe mother at the time of her deliveryand immediately thereafter was severelyill with whooping cough. Immediatelyafter birth the child was seized withattacks of coughing, which continued tothe fifth year. Tig. 1—(Case 1)—Mr. U.—Note air bell with streaks of barium. First impression is one of eventration.Tig. 2—(Case 2)—Mr. C.—Irregular heart action and shortness of breath mainsymptoms. The plate is a twenty-four hour retest, some barium in the colon. Bulbnot seen. showed the stomach partially in theleft chest. This case was likely notcongenital, but caused by the exertionsof the cough. In the Annals of Surgery, April, 1921, Samuel Gitlow and Ben Break-stone report a patient, a widow, 63years of age, whose chief complaintwas dyspnea (left chest) that datedback many years. There was no his-tory of injury. After all other attemptsat diagnosis had been tried the x-rayrevealed the stomach in the left chest. In the British Journal of Surgery,October, 1921, M. Fitz Maurice-Kel-ley, relates a case of double congenitaldiaphragmatic hernia in a patient aged35 years. The colon was involved. Thepains came on suddenly and were fol-lowed by strangulation.
