rfare of true civil-ization, with all the power and energy ofyouth. She is a woman of splendid abil-ity, of superb moral courage, and richlyendowed with that passionate love forhumanity, for justice and the higher de-velopment of the people that more thanaught else is demanded by civilizationfrom her leaders to-day. Hence we find Mrs. Gougar soonamong the most eloquent, logical andconvincing temperance advocates of theland. For many years she was in thevery front of the fight, nowhere beingmore effective than when appearing be-fore legislative committees, for she was,we think, the only prominent temperanceworker who possessed a thorough legaleducation. This she had acquired aftercoming to Indiana. Possessed of a natu-ral aptitude for study and not contentwith her achievements as a teacher, shedetermined to master the law. Af
