Then the gun on the pilot-boat booms forth over the wild waste ofwaters every thirty seconds, until out ofthe gloom and blackness comes the re-sponding answering blast of the steam-ers whistle. But in the dark who cantell the location of either steamer or pilot-boat? That is a matter that requiresconsiderable training. There are no in-struments to determine it. It can be doneonly by the ear—the most delicate instru-ment known in the world. Several timesthe pilot has asked me: Where away isthe steamer? and I have answered inone direction only to have him assure methat it was in an entirely opposite one.Hence it is a matter that training onlycan determine. The next moment the sec-ond command is given: Throw herover! In she goes. Her oarsmen areready, the pilot leaps to the rail, andwhen she rises on the next wave along-side the pilot-boat, the three of themjump, the pilot in the stern, the two menat their oars.
