An armistice of six months with theSpanish commander-in-chief of northernSouth America was concluded, beginning Digitized by Google 496 General Simon Bolivar: The Liberator. in November, 1820, but hostilities wereresumed at its expiration, in 1821. It iscreditable to both belligerents that, hence-forth, the war was, on the whole, con-ducted humanely. The year 1822 saw the victorious armiesof the Liberator bear the standard of lib-erty to Ecuador, in the regions of theequator. In the same year, he came incontact with the great General San Mar- live, until his death in 1850, in obscurityand poverty. This generous sacrifice bore the hap-piest fruits for South America.
