or a place among the new pictorialhistorians of the daily press is Sidney Craiger,some of whose recent drawings are publishedfor the first time in this issue of The Arena. Mr. Craiger is an Iowa boy, born twentyyears ago at Clinton. From his early youthhe displayed a taste and aptitude for drawing.When twelve years of age his blackboard por-traits of Longfellow, Holmes, Byron, etc., ex-cited the admiration of his fellow-scholars inNorfolk, Iowa, where he at that time resided.In 1898 his father moved to Des Moines.There the son was in too delicate health toattend school, and with the earnest determina-tion to do something which characterizes thetypical Western boy, he began to systematicallypractice the drawing of cartoons. To use hisown language recently given to the writer,not wishing to be idle I turned my attentionto copying newspaper cartoons. Iused the backs of fathers letters. Next yearI began to think about being a cartoonist. Icould not originate pictures, to say nothing ofa cartoon. I wanted to take lessons, and myeye caught the advertisement of a correspond-ence school, and all the instruction I ever re-ceived was obtained by mail. I have tried tostudy and solve the rest myself. In 1902 Ipresented some of my work to Tyler Mc-Wharter, a well-known American cartoonist.He was drawing cartoons for the Register andLeader of this city (Des Moines) at that time.He is now on the St. Paul Dispatch. He toldme I would be an artist some day, and fromthe day I met him I worked under him forabout a year (until he left).
