lthough not a sketchartist like William Forbesand Alfred Waud, who drewscenes from the battlefield,African American painterDavid Bustill Bowser (1820-1900) is considered a Civil Warartist—but for a much differentreason. Active in Philadelphia from1844 to 1889, he painted portraitsof abolitionist John Brown andPresident Abraham Lincoln. Mostimportant, he painted the regimentalcolors of the United States ColoredTroops at Camp William Penn,organized in 1863 north of Philadel-phia. Bowsers portraits ofcharismatic leaders are treasured byhistorians and fine arts enthusiastsalike, but it is his bold portrayal ofthe black soldier on the flags of theColored Troops that earned Bowserdistinction and recognition as a CivilWar artist.
