Boivsers paintings have been called bold, colorful, and powerful by American art historians, who contend that his use of color canbe traced through his teacher, Robert Douglass Jr., to Thomas Sully. Douglass studied with Sully. In 1859, the Reverend C. W. Thomp-son married Bowser and Elizabeth(Lizzie) H. S. Grey in St. Johns Churchin York. It was the second marriage forBowser; his first wife, Eliza Jane, died in1850. David and Lizzie and their fourchildren, Mary, Raphael, Annie, and IdaElizabeth, lived at 841 North FourthStreet in Philadelphia. With a growingfamily, Bowser depended upon fraternalorganizations and fire companies for hislivelihood. Lizzie Bowsers work as adressmaker added to the familysincome. It was during the early Civil Waryears that the opportunity of a lifetimecame Bowsers way.
