The place where we lived, Stobhall, by the Taynear Perth, was, two centuries ago, one of thehouses of the ancient family of the Drummonds, thehead of which, the Duke of Perth, as the Jacobitescalled him, lost everything in the rebellion of 1715.It was originally a peel tower with a very un-common appendage, a chapel of the same early dateas the tower; and now it had one of the mostcharming old gardens I have ever seen, with Irishyews and hollies, trained by long years of carefulshaping into straight columns 25 feet high, and rosesalmost reaching to the same height supported onpoles.
