Title
Axe Quartsite : Neolithic
Description
English: A complete quartzite axehead of late Neolithic date 3500-2100 BC. The axehead is triangular in plan and ovate in section. The dorsal surface is invasively flaked across the entire surface, with negative scars indicating knapping blows from right to left hand sides. The distal edge is ground and polished to create a precise cutting edge, there is some slight notching to the polished aspect of the edge. The proximal end tapers into a narrowed profile, the end is abruptly blunted. The ventral surface also contains invasive flaking but appears to have been worked from a number of different angles to create the shape. The distal end is also ground and polished.

The quartzite takes conchoidal fracturing whist retaining a grainy texture and high translucency. There are well known examples of quartzite hand axes from Africa in the tear drop axe type.

The quartzite has undergone heavy geological reworking.

Length: 126.9. Width: 46.1mm Thickness: 18.9mm Weight: 125g
