Description
English: Iron

Axehead. Wrought Iron carpenter's axe with a blade of rectangular section tapering in thickness towards a narrow cutting edge (cf. Ottaway and Cowgill 2009, fig. 7.5 no. 2452). One of a pair of sub-circular 'cheeks' remains; this part of the axe being wrapped around a haft of circa 35 by 25mm. The rest of the socket (as found) is now separated, a fresh break marking its recent loss. This axe would be used to chop or trim timbers. This object was reported together with a spearhead, an iron knife, and a strap end of Early Medieval date reported as from the same general location. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 750-950.

Length: 182mm, Width (blade): 52mm, Thickness (blade): 28mm, Thickness (at haft, revealed by fresh break): 12mm, Weight: In excess of 500gms.
