Date: 1922

Notes: In brown ink on cream coloured paper with visible chain and laid lines, a plane is pictured above an image of a building, all of which is surrounded by a floral border, architectural features, and a gardener with a bag. ; Bookplate Type : Pictorial ; Bookplate Function : OwnershipHeinrich Teuscher, also know as Henry Teuscher, was born on 8 May 1891 in Berlin and died in 1984 in Toronto. Teuscher married and had several children. He received a degree in horticulture in Berlin in 1914, and in 1921 he also received a Masters degree in horticulture and landscape architecture. While living in Berlin he worked as a horticulturalist and landscape architect for the City of Hamburg and the Berlin Botanical Garden (Botanischer Garten und Botanisches Museum Berlin-Dahlem). In 1922 Teuscher immigrated to Boston and in the following years he worked at the Morton Arboretum in Chicago, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in New York, and the New York Botanical Garden. He is best known for his work at the Jardin Botanique de Montr’å’åal from 1936 to his retirement in 1962. There he took the position of Superintendent and Chief Horticulturalist. He was the first curator of the garden having been selected by the founder of JBM, Brother Marie-Victorin. He authored a number of publications including 'Program for an Ideal Botanical Garden' in M’å’åmoires du Jardin Botanique de Montr’å’åal, and Window-Box Gardening. He is also known for his work on orchids (the genus Teuscheria is named after him). Although Teuscher lived in both Germany and Boston during the year 1922, given the German symbolism on the bookplate it is likely that it was produced before he immigrated to the United States. McGill University's Phillipe Masson Ex Libris Collection has a copy of the same bookplate. ; Personal
