Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

Early Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Dragonesque brooch, incomplete as the tail is missing and also the pin. A crudely made example with angular edges, unlike most others this has a reversed 'S' shape. The reverse is flat with many parallel scratch marks which probably derive from the movement of the pin. The obverse is decorated with a 'Celtic-style' moulded decoration and there are circles in relief on each 'dragon's head', mimicking an eye and a smaller nostril. Although this is probably a type of Dragonesque brooch that did not carry any enamel in the grooves and spaces, it is possible that the sunken spaces which are quite crudely made, did, in fact, have enamel inside.
