Description |
English: A cast copper alloy bifurcated fitting of uncertain date and function. The artefact consists of a thickened shank that expands to form a cast loop. It is irregular in both plan and cross section. The head of the loop is very robust and iron staining around the fitting suggests that it held a length of iron. It is also interesting to not the different size of the holes, one being wide (4.4mm) and the other significantly smaller (2.5mm). At the junction with the loop the shank is an irregular octagon in section, tapering along the length to an oval faceted section. The broken edge is irregular and the break is patinated suggesting damage in antiquity. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present, the upper and lower faces of the shank seem to be raised higher than the others possibly suggesting that these are more elaborate. The fitting is a mid green colour with a well formed partially polished surface. A direct parallel has not been found, however a late medieval or post medieval date is preferred based on metal and patina, the overall shape possibly suggests being associated with a draw fitting.
The artefact measures Length 30.4mm, Width 10.5mm, Height 10.5mm, Weight 9.5g. |
