on to inhabit some favourite breed-ing haunt. The nest of this species is made of straws, rootlets, moss, hair, feathers and rabbitsdown. It is built on the branches of fruittrees trained against walls, holes in walls, onledges of rock, on the stumps of broken trees,on the ends of beams projecting from oldhouses, and in recesses in the trunks of treescaused by the wood decaying. The call notes of this bird are almostexactly like those of the Yellow Wagtail, and can be heard at a considerable distance. If you set out to find a nest you willdiscover, as the writer has done on the Con-tinent, that it is exceedingly well hiddenunder an overhanging tuft of grass, in a hole under a large stone, or amongst the 27 28 Baby Birds at Home exposed roots of a tree. The old birds guardtheir secret well by calling, flying overheadand generally en
