He married, in 1802,Sarah Pierce. Joseph Gilpin lived at Sandy Spring, Montgomery county,Maryland. Joseph Gilpins father was Gideon Gilpin, who married, De-cember I, 1762. Sarah Gregg; he was born December 4, 1738, died August20, 1825. He paid the most ex-traordinary attention to the details of whatever engaged his attention, andthis persistence was probably the mainspring of the success which attendedhis efforts. He knew not what it was to feel discouraged; any trial whichdid not bring to perfection the idea with which his mind was busied wassimply regarded by him as a bit of experimental work which it had beenabsolutely necessary to perform in order to attain the desired result; dis-couragement was an unknown word to him.
