The stay of more than a month at Nootka was notmarked by any occurrences requiring special notice, ifwe except certain diplomatic negotiations betweenVancouver and Don Juan de la Bodega y Cuadra,which I shall notice in the next chapter. Socially,relations with Cuadra were in every way most friendly;and the broad territory just proved an island by thejoint English and Spanish survey was named theIsland of Cuadra and Vancouver. VANCOUVERS NARRATIVE. 281 ant Mudge was sent with despatches to England viaChina on a Portuguese trader; and on the 13th ofOctober the Discovery, Chatham, and Dcedalus sailedtogether for the south. On the way down the coastVancouver made some observations at different pointsfor the purpose of rectifying his charts; named MountSt Helens; and arrived at San Francisco on Novem-ber 14th. Lieutenant Whidbey on the Dcedalus madea survey of Gray Harbor,82 and reached Montereythe 22d of November. Lieutenant Broughton in theChatham entered the Columbia River, and in boatswent up that stream about one hundred miles, to theregion of the Cascades, taking possession of thecountry for his king. He had Grays chart; but it didnot appear that the American navigator either saw,or was ever within five leagues of its entrance, a veryfine distinction being drawn between the river andthe estuary into which it flows.83 Broughton arrivedat San Francisco about the 23d of November.
