Description
English: Wooden truncheon which was issued (along with a whistle) to Edward Honiss who served as a special constable during one of the critical periods in the City's history hand-shaped length of circular wood shaped at one end to form a handle; handle grooved with 14 rings towards the tip and one at the base; hole drilled through centre of grip with a short piece of thick string tied through; truncheon previously painted with a base coat of yellow and a top coat of grey, but this is almost completely stripped off markings- stamped on the side with the letter "P".

Notes "Wooden truncheon which was issued (along with a whistle) to Edward Honiss who served as a special constable during one of the critical periods in the City's history" (ocm) Edward Honiss, born in England in 1827, "landed in Auckland in 1860, and went in the following year to Coromandel. During the Waikato war he served in the militia in Auckland and suburbs, - ". Note that this service did not apparently qualify him as a recipient of the New Zealand Medal. He did however qualify for a Crown Land Grant (ref Daily Southern Cross, 16 March 1866) He was subsequently based in Thames where he was involved in gold mining, , became an insurance agent, and served on the Kauaeranga Highway Board and later became registrar of the Thames Hospital. (Cyclopedia of New Zealand Vol. 2, p868). He died at Thames Hospital in 1906.
