He greatly desired tocapture some prisoners to see if he could learn themeaning of the battle array before him. Henoticed a slight depression in the ground, which ledthrough, then behind the Confederate skirmish-line,nearly paralleling it. Fred saw that by a quickdash he might be able to cut off some of the skir-mishers, and giving a sharp word of command, heled his little company directly toward the enemyslines. Thunder! exclaimed Captain Hugh Ray-mond, who was again in command of the Federalskirmishers; its that dare-devil Shackelford. Heis going to charge the whole rebel army. Lbfi£l ? T

ABOUT FIFTEEN OR TWENTY FOUND THEMSELVES CUT OFF A BATTLE THAT WAS NEVER FOUGHT, 67 Then It flashed upon Hugh what Fred was try-ing to do. Boys, he cried, he is going to tryto cut off those rebel skirmishers on that rise ofground. We can help him. Charge! and witha ringing cheer, Hugh and his men dashed forward. There was a crackling and sputtering of mus-ketry, and then the Confederate picket-line was infull retreat. But about fifteen or twenty foundthemselves cut off by Fred and his men, and theythrew down their arms and cried for quarter. Well done, Fred, shouted Hugh, after thelittle skirmish was over. You took those fellowsin nicely out of the wet. Dismounting, Fred gave his hand to Hugh, say-ing: I want to thank you. Captain, for youropportune help. It saved me from serious loss andmade my task easy. But let us see what we havelearned, and what we can learn.
