This condition causes an impairment of thearterial circulation, together with a degenerationin other organs and an impairment of their nutri-tion. Causes.—The main causes are old age, heredity,alcoholism, syphilis, lead poisoning, exposure andexcesses of various kinds. The saying is, Aman is as old as his arteries. Symptoms.—Very often no signs are presentexcept the pipe-stem feeling of the arteries. When the arteries of the brain are affected theremay be attacks of fainting, false apoplectic at-tacks or spells of unconsciousness. Hardening ofthe arteries in any of the organs, gives rise totrouble in the organ thus affected. Outcome.—The condition may be prevented orheld in check, but cannot be removed. Life maybe terminated by a stroke of apoplexy, heart fail-ure or by a kidney lesion. 230
