s form what is designated as theAir Force Combat Command. Thisis organized into four Air Forces: theFirst, the Second, the Third, and theFourth Air Force. Each operates inan area which represents approxi-mately one quarter of continentalUnited States: the north-east, north-west, south-east, and south-west. TheAir Force in each of these four areasis composed of three combat elements:the Bomber Command, the Air Sup-port Command, and the InterceptorCommand. There is also a ServiceCommand, charged with logistical ar-rangements. The Bomber Commands are offen-sive striking forces, their function en-tirely aggressive. The Support Commands cooperateclosely with ground combat forces,and are the air partners of the teamwhich, with mechanized ground units,has proved so effective abroad. The Interceptor Commands, co-ordinating with the Anti-aircraft Ar-tillery Corps, are responsible for thedefense of this country against at-tack through the air.
