e nexttwo pages show the trailer as it is em-ployed to complete the radio telephoneterminal for use during emergencies.Ample space for the comfortable op- eration of the radio equipment is pro-vided in the front half of the trailer,where the radio and associated con-trol equipment have been installed.The rear half, separated from thefront half by a gas-tight partition,houses the gasoline-driven generatorunit. It likewise provides space forstorage of miscellaneous items ofequipment and supplies needed undersuch conditions. The antenna mate-rials, ropes, tarpaulins, wire, waterjug, oil supply, shovel, axe, saw, jacksand similar things are kept in the backcompartment, where they are con-venient to reach when an installationin the field is undertaken. On hot days when the sun beatsdown, shade is provided by a tar-paulin supported above the roof ofthe trailer. It is really surprisingwhat a difference this makes in thetemperature inside. The Equipment in ServiceThere is ample room for the operator inside the trailer snows, the tarpaulin is pulled over onone side of the trailer to provideshelter in front of the door. Bothwindows have screens to keep out in-sects when the windows are open forventilation. In winter, the front com-partment can be heated by an aerialtent heater for which space has beenprovided. Weight of the trailer and equipmentis under 2,000 pounds, so that it canbe towed, under all but exceptionalconditions, by a passenger car or half-ton chassis equipped with a towinghitch. This too is a valuable charac-teristic, because during emergenciesthere is need for the heavier main-tenance and repair vehicles for use inrestoration of wire lines. Moreover,with a small trailer the maneuver- ability is such that it can be takeninto open fields or pastures off theroad, which facilitates setting up theradio antenna system.
