As with manual P.B.X. equipment,there are dial P.B.X. switchboards ofmany sizes to meet various serviceneeds, ranging upward in capacityfrom the small cabinet operated bymeans of keys and a dial-equippedtelephone to one capable of handlinghundreds of lines. A particular ad-vantage of a dial P.B.X. layout is thatmembers of the organization maydial both their outgoing and theirintercommunicating calls direct, with-out assistance from the P.B.X. at-tendant. Attendants customarilyhandle only incoming calls at theP.B.X. A SMALL PRIVATE BRANCH EXCHANGE SWITCHBOARD This key switchboard has a capacity of three central-office lines and seven extensions tendants than a manual P.B.X. tohandle the same number of calls; butthe dial P.B.X. system has, of course,the equipment for the mechanicalswitching of calls which is not re-quired with the manual system. This is not to say that big dialP.B.X.s require only a few manualpositions and attendants. Many adepartment store, railroad system,bank, or other large business organi-zation has a dial P.B.X. which serveshundreds or thousands of telephonesthrough miles of wire and requiresthe services of dozens of attendantswho are as thoroughly trained as arethe operators in a telephone com-panys central office.
