s from heaven! What is it? A hand is writing words on the wall! What are those words ? No one could read them or under-stand them. The king called out, Bring in the kings wise men thatunderstand dreams, bring them quickly. They came. Butnone of them understood the words. The queen said, 0king, there is a man named Daniel who is holy, and wisefrom the gods. He can explain the words. And they sent for Daniel. See him stand there in the great palace. He looks at thewriting on the wall. Then he turns to the king, saying, 0king, the words on the wall are these: Mene, mene, tekel, upharsin: God has weighed you on His scales and foundyou wanting. You are not the kind of king he wants. Yourkingdom is to be taken from you and given to the Medes andPersians. That very night Belshazzar was killed in his palace. Oh,the cries in the great city of Babylon, when the enemy cameand burned and killed, just like they always do in war! But Daniel became a great governor under the new Per-sian king. Dan. 5.

BIBLE PRIMER 105 50. DANIEL IN THE LIONS DEN. Daniel was now placed above all other men, except KingDarius himself. Said the jealous great men, We shall never find anythingagainst Daniel. If only we could find fault with the way heworships God! So they made a wicked plan. They asked the king to com-mand that for thirty days no one should pray to any one butto the king. Pray to a king, instead of to God! — The kingso commanded. But Daniel kept the windows of his house open towardJerusalem and prayed to the true God. He did so three timeseach day. When the king heard it, he was greatly displeased. He didnot wish to have his friend Daniel hurt. Yet, a kings wordcould not be changed. And they threw Daniel into the lionsden. But the king stood above and cheered Daniel, saying,Your God that you serve always will save you. That night the king could not sleep. He could not evenlisten to music. Early in the morning he went to the den. I wonder if the lions have eaten him up, the kingthought.
