ed, Firebird,Golden Robin, or Hangnest, winters in Central America,and in the spring reaches the latitude of New York cityabout May 1. I always look for it when the cheriy treesburst into blossom, and at no other time does its beauti-ful plumage appear to better advantage than when seenagainst a background of white flowers. To the charm ofbeauty it adds the attraction of song, a rich, ringingwhistle, which can be more or less successfully imitated,when the bird immediately responds, challenging thesupposed trespasser on his domain. The Baltimores nest is a bag about five inches deepand three inches in diameter, woven of plant-fibers,thread, etc., and suspended from the terminal portion ofa limb, generally of an elm tree. The four to six eggsare white, singularly scrawled with fine black lines, andwith a few spots or blotches. The Orchard Oriole is neither so common nor sogayly dressed as his brilliantly colored relative, and, beingfonder of orchards than lawns and elm-shaded highways,

The female is especially easy tooverlook, her suit of plain olive-green closely harnioniz-Orchard Oriole, ^^S with the leaves in color. YoungIcterus spurius. uialcs at first cxactly resemble her, butPlate XXXVI. ^^ following spring return, wearingtheir fatliers black cravat. In this jDlumage they mightreadily be taken for another species, so little do they re-semble their parents in appearance. The adult chestnutand black plumage is not fully acquired until the sec-ond, or perhaps even the third spring. The Orchard Oriole winters in Central America, andin the summer is found throughout the eastern UnitedStates from the Gulf of Mexico to Massachusetts. Itarrives from the South about May 1
