that time estimated thenumber of nests at 525. In 1907, Mr.Francis Harper thought there were from250 to 300 pairs. Mr. P. B. Philipp visitedthe place the following year, and reportedonly 200 nests. In 1910, the colony hadshrunk to about twenty-five birds. Theswamp in which the birds nested has beenreduced in size since that time, by thedying of trees (thus making them unavail-able as nesting-sites for the Herons), bythe cutting of timber, and by the con-struction of a road. The swamp has nowvirtually been converted into a privatepark. Mr. Clinton G. Abbott reports a colonyat Bordentown, New Jersey, which hevisited yearly from 1899 to 1907. In itsmost populous condition, he states thatthere were 150 or more nests. Thefarmer on whose land this colony wassituated was well disposed towards thebirds and, while obliged to cut some wood,took only trees from the border of theswamp and, as far as possible, avoideddisturbing the birds. Mr. Abbott alsoreports a colony in the vicinity of Mon-tauk Point, Long Island, which may havecontained fifty nests. The character ofthe nesting-place was such that even anapproximately accurate estimate wasrendered very difficult. Mr. FrancisHarper reports small colonies of five orsix birds each, scattered at intervals alongthe south shore of Long Island; that agroup of nesting birds has been reportedto him from Walkill, Ulster County, NewYork, and still another at Honeoye Lake,near Rochester, New York. Mr. P. B. Philipp reports that in 1910there was a large colony located in amaple swamp near Great Neck, LongIsland, and not five miles from theRoslyn colony.
