se came toa trial. On that date, after more than six-teen months association with the case, learned counsel for the Milliners Associa-tion discovered Mrs. McCulloch was nota milliner and withdrew from the case.Defendant pleaded guilty and sentencewas suspended. The attention of the .Vssociation wasrecently directed to the fact that Hum-mingbirds heads and wings were offeredfor sale in a large New York City depart-ment store. Prosecution followed, andthe case was settled by the payment ofa fine of $60, and an afiidavit regardingthe jobbers from whom the goods hadbeen bought was furnished. A raid on the firm of A. Hirsh & Co.,20 West 31st Street, the jobbers, revealeda stock not only of nearly 900 heads andwings of Hummingbirds, but skins andwings of Gulls, a large quantity of Grebeplumage, Swifts, and the quills of BrownPelicans. There was also plumage ofFlamingoes and of the now rare scarletIbis and several species of Birds of Para-dise. Action against the firm has beeninaugurated.

They were made by Mr. J. G. Hub-bard, who generously contributes them to Bird-Lore, at Woods Hole, Massachusetts,in the summer of 1898, and represent birds in the aviary of Dr. C. O. Whitman whichare referred to in the succeeding articles. The birds were in perfect condition, and thephotographs are believed to be adequate portraits of a species which, if we except thesingle individual still living in the Cincinnati Zoological Garden, will never be photo- graphed again.—F.
