he spots on the under parts are barelyobservable. Curve-billed Thrasher (Toxostoma curvirostre, Fig. 4).—As with otherThrashers, the sexes in this species are alike in color, and but little variationin plumage occurs through the year. In worn summer dress the wing-barsand spots on the underparts are not evident. The nestling has the lower backand rump decidedly browner, the markings on the underparts more streakedthan in the adult. The tail-feathers have ill-defined brownish tips which seemto fade cjuickly, leaving the feathers merely paler at the ends and, in PalmersThrasher at least, with no trace of white. Two races of this species are found in the United States, both being mainlyrestricted to our Mexican border. The Curve-billed Thrasher (T. c. curvirostre)occurs from southeastern New Mexico to the lower Rio Grande Valley, andsouthward; Palmers Thrasher (T. c. palmeri), from southwestern New Mexicoand west-central Arizona southward. There are two additional races inMexico. (3) w

I had noticed them manytimes when walking through fields andswamps, but never had investigated them, taking them merely as a matter of course. November 27, 1915, I found a patch ofgoldenrod stalks containing these galls.I gathered a few of the larger ones, think-ing that I would wait for the adult insectsto emerge in the following spring. When Icame to examine them more closely, lateron, I found that some of the galls hadirregular holes in them, very muchresembling holes cut with a thin-bladedknife. These holes ranged from a sixteenthto a quarter of an inch in diameter on theoutside, and got smaller, like a cone, as thehole went toward the middle of the gall.Being puzzled as to the cause of theseholes, I took them to my zoology teach
