This is the time when all Audubon Societymembers should be particularly alert.The enormously enlarged acreage beingput under cultivation in this countrymeans that the greater crops of succulentplants, grains, and vegetables will furnishadditional food for insect-pests. A largeper cent of the eggs laid by insects neverreach maturity. One reason for this is thelack of food. With increased food therewill be an increased number of insects. This means we need a greater number ofbirds. We must wage a campaign of theutmost vigilance. Birds should be fed dur-ing the time of the year when theirnatural food is scarce. More nesting-boxesshould be placed for them, and drinking-fountains should be provided in dryregions; and, above all, look out for theman or boy with a gun!
