weeks,if unprotected there will not be a singlebird left. I can get a man to watch it—a goodman who lives in the woods and knows allthe plume-hunters, and who will put astop to it if you can raise enough moneyto engage him. We can get him deputizedhere also, and he will then tell all thehunters he is a warden to guard the BigCypress until the birds leave. He willalso guard the Rookerj- and the Rookery (names purposely omitted.—Ed.). He would require a team to have hissupplies sent in, and would be under prettyheavy expenses; but this could be coveredby a cost of $100 a month, and he willtake the job for four months; one-half ofthis amount would go for his expenses. AMICRK A\ EGRET KILLED BY PLUME HUNTERS IN SOUTH FLORIDA LATE IN FEBRUARY, 1912, AND OVERLOOKED IN THE DARKNESS Photographed just as it was found hanging in a tree where it had lodged in falling The Audubon Societies 137 undertake to try to protect, for the reasonthat they are in such isolated, unhealthysituations that it is impossible to get men,for any ordinary sum, to risk their healthor lives by taking up a station in thosedesolate regions. We are exceedingly anxious at once tosend agents into other regions, to locatenew colonies of these fast-disappearingbirds. The very splendid success whichattended our efforts in this direction lastyear, has encouraged our Board of Direc-tors to call upon the public to assist inthis most humane undertaking. We need a fund of not less than $5,000annually, for the next few years, to usein seeking out and guarding colonies ofthese birds, and also in pushing legislativeactivity looking to the restriction of theselling of the feathers of these birds
