Flicker: Colaptes auratus, Goldenrwinged Woodpecker; Tellowhammer, Highhole, Clape, Plate 49, Length: 12-13 inches. Male: Above golden brown, barred with black. Black crescent onbreast, red band on back of head. Round black spots on thebelly, black cheek patch. Wing linings and shafts of wing andtail quills gamboge-yellow. Bump white. Bill slender, curv-ing, and pointed, and dark lead-colour; feet lead-colour. Female: Lacks black cheek patches. Note: *Wick-wick-wick-wick! Also a few guttural notes. Aprolonged, jovial laugh. (Audubon.) Season: Resident, but most plentiful from April to October. Breeds: Through its range. Nest: In partly decayed trees in orchard, garden, or wood. Uggs: Usually 6, white. Bange: Northern and eastern North America, west to the easternslope of the Rocky Mountains and Alaska. Occasional on thePacific slope from California northward. Accidental in Europe.200 . PLATE 49.

FLICKER. Length, 12-13 inches. SONGLESS BIRDS. Woodpeckers This, tlie largest as well as most abundant of our commonWoodpeckers, can be easily identified, when at rest, by theblack throat crescent and red head patch, and when flyingby the white rump and golden wing linings. The Golden-winged is a Woodpecker of many aliases, among whichPigeon-woodpecker, Yucker, and Yellowhammer are locallyfamiliar. Individuals remain all the year, and frequentorchards and wooded gardens more than deep woodlands;they walk about on the ground in search of food in the man-ner of Pigeons, and are in this respect quite independent oftrees. The Flicker is a genial, sociable bird, and its hammeringis one of the first bird sounds of early spring that comesfrom the orchard. In April or May it looks for a suitablebree to bore, or else clears out a last years hole. The birdsare very wary when the excavation is under way, and,instead of dropping the chips by the tree where they areworking, carry them to some dist
