or, if transparent and free from flaws, make desirable gems, the only colorsfound in sufficient quantity outside of thered to make an appreciable supply arethe blue and the black. The blue Spinelsresemble the sapphire in color, thoughthey are somewhat paler. They comechiefly from Ceylon and Burmah, wherethey occur together with the ruby Spinel. The black Spinel is known as Ceylonite,or pleonaste, and is also obtained chieflyfrom Ceylon, although occurring of qual-ity suitable for cutting at Mount Vesu-vius in Italy. Like the ruby, Spinel can be made ar-tificially, the process being to heat amixture of alumina and magrieisia withboracic acid, and if the red color is de-sired, a little chromium oxide. The Spinel ruby seems to have beenknown to the ancients equally with thecorundum ruby, and the two were prob-ably often confounded. The natives ofIndia call the Spinel the pomegranateruby and believe to this day that it pos-sesses valuable medicinal properites.Oliver Cummings Farrington. 210

Its range is extensive, coveringthe whole of the United States during itsmigrations, and in winter it passes fur-ther southward into the valley regions ofsouthward into the valley regions ofMexico.
