of a stat-ute then passed in favor of the Ameri-can colonies, which law, remarkablyenough, has not been repealed. TheWest Indies produce enormous quanti-ties of highly prized tobacco, the Ha-vana tobacco and cigars having a world-wide fame for delicacy of aroma. Tobacco is prepared for use in vari-ous ways. The leaves are more or lessfinely cut for smoking, powdered forsnuff, pressed intO various forms forchewing and rolled into cylinders forsmoking. The leaves may be used pureor flavored with different substances, aslicorice, syrup and molasses. Tobaccois also extensively adulterated with otherleaves, as cabbage, cherry, peach, carrot, beet, etc. The very poor employ vari-ous substitutes, as red clover heads, driedcorn silk, various leaves, even finely cuthay. Enterprising boys may be seensmoking dried cornstalk pith, twigs ofthe grape vine and other porous plantbranches: The price of crude tobacco and pre-pared tobacco varies greatly, dependingupon the quality, judged by the delicacy

Some flav-ors are not the result of the sweatingor curing processes, nor yet due to thequality or variety of the tobacco, but toforeign substances added or to the mod-ification of the curing method. The pe-culiar flavor of the so-called Latakia to-bacco is due to the smoke made of thev^ood of a pine (Pinus halopensis), towhich it is exposed for several months. This tobacco is said to consist largely orwholly of the flowering tops and even theseed bearing capsules. In the manufac-ture of cigars and better grades ofsmoking and chewing tobacco the mid-ribs are removed, but are not thrownaway, but generally added to the cheapergrades of smoking tobacco and snuff to-bacco. Crude as well as prepared to-bacco is subject to deterioration aftercuring. For example, Havana cigarspronounced of excellent quality on leav-ing the factory will deteriorate in flavorand
