enteenth century. They havebeen taken there repeatedly since andare not infrequent features of theEuropean animal market. Several havebeen brought to the United States andplaced in museums and menageries. It was formerly believed that thechimpanzee was a gregarious animal, butit is now known that there are seldommore than five, or, at the utmost, tenliving together. Sometimes, however,they gather in greater numbers for play.One observer claims to have seen atone time about fifty of them which hadassembled on trees and amused them-selves with screaming and drummingon the tree trunks. They shun humanhabitation. Their nests are built intrees, not at a great height from theground. They break and twist andcross larger and smaller branches andsupport the whole on a strong bough.A nest will sometimes be found at theend of a bough, twenty or thirty feetfrom the ground. They change abid-ing places often in looking for food orfor other reasons. Two or more nestsare rarely seen in the same tree.

In the last February numberof Birds that saucy red-headedcousin of mine had his pictureand a letter. Before very longthe Red-cockaded Woodpeckerwill have his picture taken too,I suppose. Dear, dear !
