ng- this unfortunate class of chil-dren and who are best able to judge of what theirenvironment should be. As far as their individualinstruction is concerned, it would not matter whetherthey were in a national or State institution, orwhether they were at home with a private teacher. But every classification only throws an additionallimitation around their opportunities to learn. It, therefore, appears that these children shouldhave as much association as possible with personswho can see and who use the manual alphabet. Inour State schools this opportunity is given and thedeaf and blind not only have the valuable instruc-tion of special teachers, but also receive much in-formation from the children in the deaf schools ;and with such information naturally comes pleasureand happiness. We, therefore, feel that it would bean unfortunate thing for such children to be classi-fied in one school where they would be deprived ofthe broader companionship of the deaf who can seeand talk freely. 138

JANE PATTERSON. MISS JANE PATTERSON. The Blind-Deaf I had intended to confine my mention of the blind-deaf entirely to the United States and Canada, asthe difficulties of getting- approximately completeand accurate accounts of those abroad seem insuper-able. But Miss Jane Patterson, of Clapham, Lon-don, England, has proved such an attractive person-ality, with so much clear common sense, and verysound — even brilliant — ideas, that I could not re-sist the temptation to depart from my rule to includeonly persons of this country. She was born in De-cember, 1873 ; lost hearing- at eight and sight ateleven ; retains her speech ; uses the double-handalphabet, and has recently taken up the single-handone. The following extract from a letter of Miss Pat-terson is so excellent an exposition of what all theblind-deaf should think and do that I believe so ad-mirable a contribution to true views on the blind-deaf should not be lost. That Miss Patterson doesnot waste the hours as they go by i
