Summary edit

Description
English: German prisoners carrying a wounded comrade, Western Front, during World War I. German prisoners carrying a wounded comrade on a stretcher. They appear to be climbing out of a trench or a shell hole. A village can be seen in the distance. They are clearly just coming from the Front as they are still wearing their steel helmets.

As a young nurse looking after wounded German prisoners like this man, Vera Brittain wrote, 'I took the pale fingers in mine, thinking how ridiculous it was that I should be holding this man's hand in friendship when perhaps, only a week or two earlier, Edward [Vera's brother] up at Ypres had been doing his best to kill him. The world was mad and we were all victims.'
[Original reads:'Boche bringing in wounded.']
