ROSEATE BIL.I* ROSEATE SPOON-BIL.Ii. This elegant bird inhabits thesea-shores of America, from themouth of the river Amazon toFlorida or Georgia. It is oftenseen up the Mississippi in thesummer season. It wades ordives about in quest of shell-fish,insects, and various kinds ofsmall fish. This bird is of a beautiful pinkcolor, with a mixture of black atthe lower part of the neck. It isabout the size of a heron. Thebill is about eight inches longand has the shape of a spoon. The nest is placed on hightrees, near the water side. Theylay three or four white eggs, andof the size of those of a hen.They are very noisy duringbreeding time, like our rx>ks. 8

THE BLUE JAY. THE BLUE JAY, The Blue Jay is ornamentedwith a crest of light blue or pur-ple feathers, which he can ele-vate or depress at pleasure. Thewhole upper parts are light blueor purple, with a collar of blackI passing down each side of theneck. The under parts arewhite. He is very loquaciousand coxcombical, and quite oddin his tones and gestures. His favorite food consists ofchestnuts, acorns, and Indiancorn; but he will sometimes eat bugs and caterpillars, and plun-der the cherry-tree. It is a na-tive of many parts of the UnitedStates. When engaged in mak-ing love, his notes resemble thesoft chatterings of a duck. 10
