Several of the largest plants in the worldwere built, feeding hundreds of miles of canals and laterals;some $15,000,000 was spent in development, and twenty-five thousand white people moved in. The Rio Grandewas not able to supply all the needed water; marketingdifficulties, frost, and ignorance led to many losses. Irriga-tion companies are being taken over by public drainagedistricts at Harlingen and Donna. A solid future existsbased more on field crops and stock and less on sensationaltruck raising than was the iridescent boom. Near Pecos City are two shallow water belts: from Here-ford in the southwestern Panhandle southward and east-ward to Seminole, Midland, Plainview, and Lubbock liesthe great shallow well-irrigable region.
