English: Border Fragment, 16th century
Description
English: Border fragment of natural linen embroidered in gold, silver and colored silks, mainly red and green. Design shows a symmetrical arrangement of curving vines and flowers with two wyverns confronted. Between the wyverns is a small eagle with wings spread and head in profile. Within a frame made by the vine tendrils is a ring-like shape with the cypher "SN" or "CN." Much of the gold is laid down over the colored silk producing a luminous quality.
